Higgins, a British barrister, led a decade-long campaign for “ecocide” to be recognised as a crime against humanity. She sold her house and gave up a high-paying job so she could dedicate herself to attempting to create a law that would make corporate executives and government ministers criminally liable for the damage they do to ecosystems.

How do we get clean air for children? We all have the right to breathe clean air but children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of illegal and harmful levels of air pollution and need protecting. The Clean Air Parents’ Network, supported by ClientEarth and the British Lung Foundation, is calling for the UK Government to fund emergency action to protect children from toxic air, where they learn and where they play.

Join us for a panel discussion and Q&A, supported by the Little House of Science, to learn more about how air pollution is damaging children’s health and how you can make a difference for young hearts and lungs.

Speakers include:

  • James Thornton - CEO, ClientEarth
  • Dr Ian Mudway - Lecturer in Respiratory Toxicology, King's College London
  • Andrea Lee - Senior Clean Air Campaigner, ClientEarth

From 9.30am - 12.00 noon

James Thornton Chief Executive Officer

The founding CEO of ClientEarth. The New Statesman has named him as one of 10 people who could change the world. The Lawyer has picked him as one of the top 100 lawyers in the UK. In 2016, he was named as one of the 1,000 most influential people in London and also won Leader of the Year at the Business Green Awards. The Financial Times awarded him its Special Achievement accolade at the FT 2016 Innovative Lawyers Awards.

Disobedient Films explores what brought environmental pioneer James Thornton to London to set up ClientEarth – and his legal team’s six-year battle to protect our lungs from air pollution.

“Much discussion of the environment has a negative focus. People often feel disempowered, that there is little they can do. We use law as a tool to mend the relationship between human societies and the Earth. We work in Europe and beyond, bringing together law, science and policy to create practical solutions to key environmental challenges.”

ClientEarth is a non-profit environmental law organisation, founded in 2008, with offices in London, Brussels, Warsaw, and Beijing. In 2012 BusinessGreen gave ClientEarth its NGO of the Year award. In 2013 ClientEarth was awarded the Law Society's LSA Award for Excellence in Environmental Responsibility. Wikipedia
