2019 Mindfulness Practice Programmes

Why is practice important? When not moving toward integration, complex systems like our lives move toward either chaos or rigidity, rather than the flexible harmonious flow of integrative wellbeing. ~ Dr Dan Siegel

Below are links to the online audio and downloads for all recent weekly mindfulness practice meditations 'Free of Charge - Open to All'. Practising Mindfulness may be the kindest action we can take for our own growth and that of humanity because we are all connected. As we change individually we assist in making shifts in the collective. Connecting with our deep wellbeing empowers us to take action for a happier and more caring world. Thank you for being on the journey of bringing more kindness, compassion and resilience into our world!

Mindfulness Practice - Thursday 19th September 2019

In this important volume, Osho points beyond all paths, beyond all practices, beyond all accumulated wisdom. He shows the way to true liberation, and it is not where one might traditionally think of it. From the Zen master Kakuan Ten Bulls, Osho shows the way to blissful emptiness, only to return home to live life fully. We enter on rare pilgrimage. The Ten Bulls of Zen are something unique in the history of human consciousness. Truth has been expressed in many ways, and it has always been found that it remains unexpressed whatsoever you do. However you express it, it eludes - it is elusive. It simply escapes description. The words that you use for it cannot contain it, And the moment you have expressed it in words, immediately you feel frustrated as if the essential has been left behind and only the nonessential has been expressed. The Ten Bulls of Zen has tried in a single effort to express the inexpressible.

Om ~ Ragani on Ancient Spirit

OM is the symbol of the universal heartbeat; it is not a word. And as you come closer and closer to the universal heartbeat, the by-product is a deepening silence. Shantih means silence and it is always repeated three times because by the time you reach to the fourth, you are no more – just the silence has remained. You have disappeared as an entity separate from the universe. www.cdbaby.com/cd/ragani3

Perceiving the Bull ~ Osho

The ten paintings that tell the famous Zen story of a farmer in search of his lost bull provide an allegorical expression of the search for enlightenment. Originally Taoist, The Ten Bulls were repainted by the 12th-century Chinese Zen master, Kakuan, and first appeared in the West in American author, Paul Reps'book, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones. These discourses are Osho's commentaries on the paintings, and on the poetry and prose which accompany them in Paul Reps'book. In answering the question, "Why am I here?" Osho dismantles not only this but probably every "why" the mind can contrive.

The Mindful Way through Depression ~ Mark Willliams

If you've ever struggled with depression, take heart. Mindfulness, a simple yet powerful way of paying attention to your most difficult emotions and life experiences, can help you break the cycle of chronic unhappiness once and for all. In The Mindful Way through Depression, four uniquely qualified experts explain why our usual attempts to think our way out of a bad mood or just snap out of it lead us deeper into the downward spiral. Through insightful lessons drawn from both Eastern meditative traditions and cognitive therapy, they demonstrate how to sidestep the mental habits that lead to despair, including rumination and self-blame, so you can face life s challenges with greater resilience. www.youtube.com/watch

Guided Loving Kindness (Metta) Meditation ~ Tara Brach

Metta practice, also called lovingkindness meditation, cultivates both a loving heart and a collected, settled mind. The practice uses specific phrases to send loving and kind wishes to yourself, loved ones, neutral persons, difficult people and to all beings everywhere, without exception. You might choose three or four of the below, or create whatever phrases resonate for you:

May I be filled with loving kindness

May I feel safe from harm.

May I accept myself just as I am.

May I be peaceful and at ease.

May I be happy.

Spend a few minutes or more offering the phrases to yourself, taking the time to imagine and directly feel the experience the phrases invoke. Then do the same as you offer it to the others mentioned above. You can bring in the metta practice at the beginning, end or during any part of the meditation. For some people, it can be beneficial to emphasize metta as a primary practice—especially when there has been trauma or great self-aversion. This skilful means is a beautiful way to awaken the heart.

In this book, Jon Kabat-Zinn maps out a simple path for cultivating mindfulness in one's own life. It speaks both to those coming to meditation for the first time and to longtime practitioners, anyone who cares deeply about reclaiming the richness of his or her moments. In short, this is the art of mindfulness, which has to be kindled and nurtured because "you can only get there if you are fully here". www.youtube.com/watch?

Tao Te Ching ~ Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart explores the essence of the spiritual classic that has accompanied him for thirty years and revisits Lao Tse’s timeless work to further explore its life-changing truths. The Tao Te Ching is one of the most important texts within the Taoist tradition and the most widely translated work in world literature after the Bible. Long believed to be the work of Lao-Tzu, "The Book of the Way" is considered the classic manual on the art of living. The Tao Te Ching (pronounced, more or less, Dow Deh Jing) is essentially about being in harmony with the way things are. It teaches how to live and work effortlessly by being in accord with the Tao - the basic principle of the universe. This wisdom is applied to themes as diverse as raising a family, business, good government and ecology.over seven weeks www.youtube.com/watch

Part 3 Practical and Profound: Mindfulness in Healthcare ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD

A few years ago, I was at a conference introducing Jon Kabat-Zinn. The beginning of the talk focused on my experience when I read page 14 of Kabat-Zinn’s book, Wherever You Go, There You Are. This was a particularly difficult time in my life when I was feeling uneasy, confused, and dissatisfied with things. Now, if you’ve read this book, you know he has all kinds of wonderful suggestions on how to sprinkle the philosophy and practice of mindfulness into everyday life. But when I came upon this one section it said to try reminding yourself from time to time that “This is it.” And I said, “Really, this is it?” This is all there is? Well, apparently it was. Later on that day I stood looking at the Golden Gate Bridge in awe at the beauty of San Francisco and the headlands and the phrase naturally arose in my mind, “This is it.” What a wonderful moment. We Are Truth ~ East Forest & Ram Dass

Knowing you’re God and being God are two different things. I mean intellectually, we all know we’re God – most of us understand that. But the direct experience of merging into it is another matter. What seems to happen as you evolve spiritually is that the impurities or the things that veil you from being in your deepest truth become more unbearable.

I’m not talking about the judging mind coming up and saying, “I’m bad for it” or, “It’s bad for me.” It’s like if you have a lover, but you’re always separated by some veil from that lover – it becomes unbearable after a while. You just keep wanting to rip the veil apart. I’m so aware in myself, for example, how when I don’t clear my mind, when I don’t extricate myself from identification with my thought forms, my whole life gets thick. I can feel the thickness of it and it’s a sort of dense quality. I end up like I used to be, “It’s all fine, and I can get through life, and it’s all going fine, everybody likes me, and I like everybody, and I’m making money, and I’m doing my life, and I’m getting up and going to bed, and doing good,” but somehow it’s not living truth. Compassionate Acceptance ~ Vidyamala Burch

Pain, suffering and stress can be intolerable - but it doesn't have to be this way.

Compassionate Acceptance is a simple practice that you can incorporate into your daily life to relieve chronic pain and the suffering and stress of illness. Clinical trials show that mindfulness is at least as effective as the most commonly prescribed painkillers such as Tramadol and codeine. A recent study published in the Journal of Neuroscience demonstrated that it is more effective than morphine. Mindfulness can also significantly reduce the anxiety, depression, irritability, exhaustion and insomnia that can arise from chronic pain and illness.

Resting in the Flow of Experience ~ Ed Halliwell

Being human is like flowing as a river—many moving droplets make up the stream. The river changes all the time, yet there is continuity as it follows well-worn grooves through the landscape. A river cannot suddenly shift its direction, just as we humans tend to follow a course set by past events and patterns. Yet, the more we become aware of how the flow occurs and the grooves are followed, the more we can relax into the ride. As we see more clearly, we also become more able to steer our way skilfully through the current. A good way to begin is to practice resting in the flow, as in this meditation. Settle into a posture for sitting meditation - Begin paying attention to breathing - Open awareness now to the whole body - Now bring awareness to thoughts - Finally, open up your mindfulness to every aspect of conscious experience. www.mindful.org/mindful-life-flux/

Practical and Profound: Mindfulness in Healthcare ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD

Look at some of the challenges facing modern medicine on the individual and systemic levels, and hear simple, practical ways to nurture patient and provider well-being ● Recognize the common roots between medicine and mindfulness, and explore mindfulness practice as a radical medical act ● Learn the effects that mindfulness and compassion have on public health as a whole, and know the possibilities of mindful medicine

JON KABAT-ZINN, PhD, is founding Executive Director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is also the founding director of its renowned Stress Reduction Clinic and Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. I Am Loving Awareness ~ East Forest & Ram Dass

"As you’ll hear from “I Am Loving Awareness,” the track shared here, the music is a beautiful wash of violin drones, piano and wordless vocals provided by devotional singer Krishna Das. Popping up through it all like little bursts of color is Ram Dass, letting us know that one simple way to “get out of our minds, our thinking minds,” is to use the song’s title as a mantra."

Ram Dass and composer East Forest join forces for this full length album. In June 2018, East Forest was invited to Ram Dass’ home in Maui to join in conversation and record brand new teachings from the legendary teacher. After capturing these words of wisdom, East Forest returned to his studio in the high desert of Southern Utah to compose the soundtrack for Ram Dass' wisdom. music.eastforest.org

Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Thursday 23 May 2019

The Sky is Awareness

What does it mean to be aware? Ram Dass compares awareness to the sky, while our lives are the clouds passing by. He discusses the Dzogchen tradition, which is deeply connected to this conception of awareness.

“I invite you to identify your awareness with the sky. In your awareness there is your life that is cloud. In other words, your whole concept of who you think you are, all your sense experiences of your body, all of the stuff of ‘me,’ is all the cloud. And the cloud is being appreciated or embraced or carried by the sky. The sky is just awareness. It’s much easier to describe the cloud than to describe the sky. The sky doesn’t have a beginning or an end, and it really doesn’t have qualities, it’s just sky. That’s the quality of awareness. It doesn’t have a trip. The sky doesn’t have a trip, it’s just hanging out.” – Ram Dass

Meditation Tip 8 & 9: Gratitude & Generosity ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn

Later on that day I stood looking at the Golden Gate Bridge in awe at the beauty of San Francisco and the headlands and the phrase naturally arose in my mind, “This is it.” What a wonderful moment. www.youtube.com

Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Thursday 2 May 2019

The syllable "om" is first described as all-encompassing mystical entity in the Upanishads.

Today, in all Hindu art and all over India and Nepal, 'om' can be seen virtually everywhere, a common sign for Hinduism and its philosophy and theology.

Hindus believe that as creation began, the divine, all-encompassing consciousness took the form of the first and original vibration manifesting as sound "OM".

A Guided Mindfulness Meditation ~ Tara Brach

This meditation establishes an atmosphere of loving kindness with the “smile”; relaxes and awakens through the body; and guides us into a spacious presence. We then rest in that presence, letting go of any controlling, and simply allow life to be as it is. It’s in “letting be” that we come home to the luminosity and tenderness of natural awareness. www.youtube.com

I saw my beloved's flower garden , In my drunken haze

Mindfulness Meditation for a Frantic World ~ Professor Mark Williams

MINDFULNESS reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that can be incorporated into daily life to help break the cycle of unhappiness, stress, anxiety and mental exhaustion and promote genuine joie de vivre. It's the kind of happiness that gets into your bones. It seeps into everything you do and helps you meet the worst that life can throw at you with new courage. More importantly, it also works for people who are not depressed but who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of the modern world. MINDFULNESS focuses on promoting joy and peace rather than banishing unhappiness. It is precisely focused to help ordinary people boost their happiness and confidence levels whilst also reducing anxiety, stress and irritability. www.youtube.com/watch?

Mindfulness ~ Tim Ryan

We’re often told that stress is a bad thing. Studies have shown the negative effects of stress on the mind and body – such as cardiovascular diseases, weaker immune systems, premature aging, psychological problems, and a whole host of other nasties. Fortunately, there are medicines, exercise programs, diets, and even meditation techniques to help deal with it. In 2012, however, researchers at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health published a study suggesting that there’s far more to stress than we’ve been led to believe. According to them, when approached in the right way, stress can actually be good for us. www.youtube.com/watch?
