Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Thursday 22 November 2018

Clean air is essential for a healthy life. More than 400,000 early deaths are caused each year by air pollution in Europe. We are all affected but some, especially children and older people, are more vulnerable than others. We are fighting for everybody’s right to breathe clean air.

Om

Om a word of affirmation or assent is a mantra, or vibration, that is traditionally chanted at the beginning and end of meditation or yoga sessions. Coming from Hinduism, the mantra is considered to have high spiritual and creative power but despite this, it is a mantra that can be recited by anyone. Hindus believe that as creation began, the divine, all-encompassing consciousness took the form of the first and original vibration manifesting as sound "OM".

Anxiety ~ Tara Brach

The nature of being human is that we get caught in anger and judgment, hurt and fear. Our conditioned mind is filled with distractions, including worry-thoughts that continually create anxiety in the body. By gathering and collecting the attention, the mind can settle and allow for a relaxed, wakeful presence. This talk explores what it means to be without anxiety towards this universal emotional conditioning as it appears in ourselves and others. This meditation guides us in relaxing the body, and then establishing the breath as a home base. Condemning imperfection binds our identity with an imperfect self. As we learn to pause and open to the direct embodied experience of emotions, we discover a space of presence that is filled with compassion and wisdom. Like the ocean, we can include difficult waves of experience and yet remember our inherent vastness, mystery and wholeness. https://www.youtube.com/watch

A brief climate change video essay on the environmental impacts of veganism, and how we can re frame going vegan less as a lifestyle and more as an aspiration. Happiness is all in your mind ~ Gen Kelsang Nyema

Simple, profound truths are the realm of this Buddhist nun. Her message? The gift of happiness truly lies within our own hearts and minds. Gen Kelsang Nyema, exuding a peacefulness that immediately connects with the audience, starts by asking three questions: Are you having a good day? Why? Tomorrow, would you rather have a good day or a bad day? She teaches that we cannot put our happiness at the whim of other people and of circumstances. If we want to be happy, we have to "stop outsourcing our happiness to other people" and cultivate a source of inner peace. What happens next is quite astounding. The whole crowd of 350+ people proceeds to meditate with Nyema. There's a little squirming at first, but as she leads the audience through a calm citation of how to rest the mind, audience members feel a collective relaxation flow into the room and through the people. Fascinating! Refreshing. https://www.youtube.com/watch

Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Thursday 1 November 2018

The first WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health was held in Geneva on 30 October – 1 November 2018.

Air Pollution in our cities and our homes kills 7 million people every year and accelerates climate change. Please support the global campaign #Breathelife to reduce air pollution, improve health and preserve our climate.

The IAAF and UN Environment (UNEP) announced in May that they were joining forces to address the issue of poor air quality, which has led to seven million deaths globally, according to a World Health Organisation study.

The important thing is to raise the awareness among athletes and recreational runners of how important air quality is for their health. In order to improve air quality, we need to monitor it.

For decades, pollution and its harmful effects on people’s health, the environment, and the planet have been neglected both by Governments and the international development agenda. Yet, pollution is the largest environmental cause of disease and death in the world today, responsible for an estimated 9 million premature deaths.

The Lancet Commission on pollution and health addresses the full health and economic costs of air, water, and soil pollution. Through analyses of existing and emerging data, the Commission reveals pollution’s severe and underreported contribution to the Global Burden of Disease. It uncovers the economic costs of pollution to low-income and middle-income countries. The Commission will inform key decision makers around the world about the burden that pollution places on health and economic development, and about available cost-effective pollution control solutions and strategies.

Unlocking the 4th Industrial Revolution Technology Potential in Accelerating the Circular Economy. What are the key challenges in electronics, plastics and the food- and bio-economy currently hampering the transition to a circular economy at scale and speed?

A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.

The World Circular Economy Forum 2018 in Japan consists of 17 plenary and parallel sessions showcasing the world’s best circular economy solutions for business, cities and finance.

This Sacred Journey ~ Pema Chödrön: 18 October 2018

For over forty years, Pema Chödrön has embraced our faults, our fears, and our failings, reflecting them back to us with compassion, insight, and the possibility of freedom.

As she entered the ninth decade of her life, Pema Chödrön spent a year in solitary retreat working deeply with traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings on death, including teachings on the bardos from The Tibetan Book of the Dead. This interactive online retreat, recorded at her home monastery, Gampo Abbey, in front of a small audience of her close students and friends, brings the fruits of Pema’s study and practice to you.

Christ Consciousness ~ John Main

It becomes more evident each year that meditation, as a way of friendship and compassion, builds a bridge of the spirit between peoples of different faiths, between rich and poor, and between those suffering conflict or division. The great social and psychological distresses of modern society call for a change of mind and heart, for a deep contemplative response. John Main believed that each human being, whatever their lifestyle, is called to this spiritual depth and that the foundations of civilisation rest upon the contemplative consciousness.

PM's words at World Mental Health Day reception: 10 October 2018

We are not looking after our health if we are not looking after our mental health. And we need that true parity between physical and mental health, not just in our health systems but elsewhere as well – in our classrooms, our workplaces, in our communities too.

That is why we were so pleased this week to host the first ever Global Ministerial Summit on mental health. And in this landmark agreement we see more than 50 countries have supported the declaration to achieve equity for mental health in the 21st Century.

The relationship between mindfulness and mental health

Mindfulness is recommended as a treatment for people with mental ill-health as well as those who want to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Mindfulness exercises are ways of paying attention to the present moment, using techniques like meditation, breathing, and yoga. Training helps people to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and body sensations so that instead of being overwhelmed by them, they are better able to manage them. Practising mindfulness can give more insight into emotions, boost attention and concentration, and improve relationships.

Mindfulness can be practiced by children, young people and adults. There are different ways to practice mindfulness. Group courses run to practise mindfulness in person and there are online courses too where you can learn through self-directed practice at home. You don't need to be religious or spiritual to practise mindfulness. It can help people with or without religious beliefs.

The Trick To Stop That Voice Inside Your Head ~ Eckhart Tolle

Tolle talks about how our negative thought patterns often dominate our minds—on a personal and collective level—and how we can prevent these patterns from manifesting negative situations in our daily lives. Every thought is a form of energy and certain thoughts can take over human beings in the same way that a virus can proliferate and take over the body. For example, a person reads an article on the Internet about a conspiracy theory, and then a little thought seeps into his or her mind about it. Suddenly, it takes hold of the mind and creates other related thoughts about conspiracies until that individual is totally possessed by a group of interrelated thoughts. As a result, he or she begins to look at reality through the veil of these delusions. This is how a viral infection happens on the mental level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um5fKNsJrVc

Terry Patten on Inner-work and Outer-work

A grandfather is talking with his grandson and he says there are two wolves inside of us which are always at war with each other.

One of them is a good wolf which represents things like kindness, bravery and love. The other is a bad wolf, which represents things like greed, hatred and fear.

The grandson stops and thinks about it for a second then he looks up at his grandfather and says, “Grandfather, which one wins?”

The grandfather quietly replies, the one you feed.

Om

The syllable "om" is first described as all-encompassing mystical entity in the Upanishads. Today, in all Hindu art and all over India and Nepal, 'om' can be seen virtually everywhere, a common sign for Hinduism and its philosophy and theology. Hindus believe that as creation began, the divine, all-encompassing consciousness took the form of the first and original vibration manifesting as sound "OM".

Mindfulness Practice

Mindfulness practice couldn't be simpler: pay attention to the breath, and when your attention wanders, return. By following these simple steps, you can get to know yourself up close and personal. The essential meditation is Silence. We are made of sound and silence.Sound is our mind; silence is our being. Sound is our trouble; silence is our liberation. All other meditations are different forms of witnessing, but witnessing is present in every kind of meditation as an essential part. Vipassana Page

Meditation Tip 3: Beginners Mind ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn

The richness of present-moment experience is the richness of life itself. Too often we let our thinking and our beliefs about what we "know" prevent us from seeing things as they really are. We tend to take the ordinary for granted and fail to grasp the extra-ordinariness of the ordinary. To see the richness of the present moment, we need to cultivate what has been called "beginner's mind," a mind that is willing to see everything as if for the first time. www.youtube.com

'The Anthem' - Rio 2016 Olympic Games was a demonstration of global unity, no event is more powerful than the Olympic Games. It is a chance for each of us to embrace our shared humanity and the progress that comes when the world comes together. 'The Anthem' is a reflection of the Samsung brand and our continuous pursuit to break down geographic barriers and unite the world through technology and borderless communication," said Younghee Lee, EVP of global marketing and mobile communications business at Samsung Electronics.

"By singing one anthem, fans and athletes across the globe can feel a shared sense of pride and unity and together celebrate collective progress, which is integral to the spirit of the Olympic Games." The lines chosen from each anthem are beautifully woven together to create a powerful message—that a world that stands together is more powerful than a world divided. Through our unity and harmony, we'll remain at peace as one.

For we are young and free, with glowing hearts we see thee rise.

The day of glory has arrived, oh say can you see, a vivid ray of love and hope descends to Earth.

The people living united and progressive, join together all of our hearts as one.

Happy and glorious, listen to us gently with the infinite love.

Unity and justice and freedom, stand unchanged by wind and frost.

Offer peace to friends, and united we shall stand.
