OM is the symbol of the universal heartbeat; it is not a word. And as you come closer and closer to the universal heartbeat, the by-product is a deepening silence. You have disappeared as an entity separate from the universe. www.cdbaby.com/cd/ragani3

As an advocate of mindfulness as a way of life, I invite you to incorporate mindfulness as a part of your New Year Resolutions. You might want to commit to doing one thing mindfully per day, or establish a more routine mindfulness practice. You might even want to get yourself formally trained in mindfulness, if you have been toying with the idea for some time. Perhaps you already have a New Year Resolution in mind, and you could be more mindful about achieving or sticking with it.". www.youtube.com/watch?

Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Thursday 21 December 2017

The following program was first played on 22 December 2016

OmThe syllable "om" is first described as all-encompassing mystical entity in the Upanishads. Today, in all Hindu art and all over India and Nepal, 'om' can be seen virtually everywhere, a common sign for Hinduism and its philosophy and theology. Hindus believe that as creation began, the divine, all-encompassing consciousness took the form of the first and original vibration manifesting as sound "OM".

Silent Night

How the world's most famous Christmas carol came to be written and set to music. In 1818, a roving band of actors was performing in towns throughout the Austrian Alps. On December 23 they arrived at Oberndorf, a village near Salzburg where they were to re-enact the story of Christ's birth in the small Church of St. Nicholas. Unfortunately, the St. Nicholas' church organ wasn't working and would not be repaired before Christmas. Because the church organ was out of commission, the actors presented their Christmas drama in a private home. That Christmas presentation of the events in the first chapters of Matthew and Luke put assistant pastor Josef Mohr in a meditative mood. Instead of walking straight to his house that night, Mohr took a longer way home. The longer path took him up over a hill overlooking the village. From that hilltop, Mohr looked down on the peaceful snow-covered village. Reveling in majestic silence of the wintry night, Mohr gazed down at the glowing Christmas-card like scene. His thoughts about the Christmas play he had just seen made him remember a poem he had written a couple of years before. That poem was about the night when angels announced the birth of the long-awaited Messiah to shepherds on a hillside. www.icce.rug.nl

Happiness Is Your Choice ~ Osho

Meditation is enjoying oneself, just sitting silently doing nothing: happy, joyous without any reason, because all reasons come from outside. You meet a beautiful woman and you are happy, or you meet a beautiful man and you are happy – but the meditator is simply happy. His happiness has no reason from the outside world; his happiness wells up within himself. http://www.osho.com/read/

Revd Graeme Watson explains the significance of approaching God through a one-word prayer, explains the significance of ‘the cloud of unknowing’ and ‘the cloud of forgetting’, reflects on humility and charity as virtues fundamental to human living and to contemporary prayer, and explains how contemplative prayer deals with the roots of sin. wccm.org/content/meditatio-cds

Aham Brahmasmi ~ ViernesdeMantra Qüirio www.youtube.com

And the answer the Buddha gave is of immense importance to understand. He said, "I am just a Buddha -- I am just awareness, and nothing else. I don't belong to any category. Every category is an identification and I don't have any identity. "Sunil Sethi, exactly the same is my answer: I don't belong to any category, and godman is a category. I am simply awareness. I am simply a watchfulness. And this is not something special; this is part of your innermost core, too. You are as divine as anybody else - a Buddha, a Krishna, a Christ. You are as divine as anybody else. The highest and the lowest, all are divine, because only God exists. This is the first thing to be remembered: that I don't belong to any category. Neither do you belong to any category. Are you a Hindu, a Mohammedan, a Christian? Are you black or white? These are things which are outside - you are not these things. Consciousness cannot be black and cannot be white; consciousness can't have any colour. Are you rich or poor? Consciousness cannot be rich or poor either. Are you a man or a woman? Consciousness is neither a man nor a woman. Consciousness is simply consciousness! To realize this is to declare, "Aham Brahmasmi! - I am God!" It is not a new category. When somebody declares "I am God!" it is not a new category, it is simply disappearing from all categories. That is exactly the meaning of the word 'God'. When Mansoor says, "Ana'l haq! - I am the truth!" he is saying the same thing. He is saying, "I am consciousness." ~ Osho: Dhammapada Vol 1, #10

Our Place in the Universe ~ Alan Watts

What is our place in the universe? Some beliefs would place us at the apex of creation, while others would suggest we are nothing more than insignificant motes in a cosmos that is vast beyond our comprehension. However, there is an idea central to Eastern spirituality that offers a radically different way of thinking about this essential question. In this audio clip, spiritual and philosophical legend Alan Watts brings his unequaled gift for decoding the mysteries of Eastern wisdom to help us understand our true place in life—and how we are neither masters nor victims of creation, but something far more integral to the living universe. www.youtube.com

Mindfulness Meditation for a Frantic World ~ Professor Mark Williams

MINDFULNESS reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that can be incorporated into daily life to help break the cycle of unhappiness, stress, anxiety and mental exhaustion and promote genuine joie de vivre. It's the kind of happiness that gets into your bones. It seeps into everything you do and helps you meet the worst that life can throw at you with new courage. More importantly, it also works for people who are not depressed but who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of the modern world. MINDFULNESS focuses on promoting joy and peace rather than banishing unhappiness. It is precisely focused to help ordinary people boost their happiness and confidence levels whilst also reducing anxiety, stress and irritability. www.youtube.com/watch?

I Always Thought that I Loved Somebody ~ OSHO

In this talk, 'I Always thought That I Loved Somebody', Osho with his singular perspective, points out, amongst his other insights, that love is not a commodity but a quality of being. "The basic fallacy that you are carrying within you is that you always loved somebody. This is one of the most significant things about all human beings; their love is always for somebody, it is addressed -- and the moment you address your love, you destroy it. It is as if you are saying, "I will breathe only for you -- and when you are not there, then how can I breathe?" www.youtube.com/watch

Chakra Map ~ Osho

A short talk on the Indian Yoga Chakra Map and the Chinese Taoist Energy Map. "According to the Taoist mapping of inner consciousness there are seven holes. That is exactly the same as seven chakras. Each Taoist hole is concerned with one chakra of yoga. There are seven chakras: MULADHAR, SVADHISTHAN, MANIPURA, ANAHAT, VISHUDDHI, AJNA, SAHASRAR. These seven chakras of yoga are concerned with each hole in the heart. When you pass through one chakra then one hole opens in the heart; when you pass through the second chakra, the second hole opens in the heart; when you pass through the third chakra, the third hole opens in the heart. In yoga they have not talked about those seven holes because that will make it very confusing and complex. There is no need. One map is enough." Metta (Loving Kindness) Meditation ~ Sharon Salzberg

When you give your fullest attention to whoever you are interacting with, you take past and future out of the relationship, except for practical matters. When you are fully present with everyone you meet, you relinquish the conceptual identity you made for them — your interpretation of who they are and what they did in the past — and are able to interact without the egoic movements of desire and fear. Attention, which is alert stillness, is the key. www.youtube.com/watch

Guided Loving Kindness (Metta) Meditation ~ Tara Brach

Metta practice, also called lovingkindness meditation, cultivates both a loving heart and a collected, settled mind. The practice uses specific phrases to send loving and kind wishes to yourself, loved ones, neutral persons, difficult people and to all beings everywhere, without exception. You might choose three or four of the below, or create whatever phrases resonate for you:

May I be filled with loving kindness

May I feel safe from harm.

May I accept myself just as I am.

May I be peaceful and at ease.

May I be happy.

Spend a few minutes or more offering the phrases to yourself, taking the time to imagine and directly feel the experience the phrases invoke. Then do the same as you offer it to the others mentioned above. You can bring in the metta practice at the beginning, end or during any part of the meditation. For some people, it can be beneficial to emphasize metta as a primary practice—especially when there has been trauma or great self-aversion. This skilful means is a beautiful way to awaken the heart.

Unconditioned Consciousness and the Power of Now ~ Eckhart Tolle

For many thousands of years, we have lived identified with the conditioned mind, deriving from it a narrow and ultimately illusory sense of self, a "little me" — always struggling, fearful, uneasy, in conflict with itself and others. We are now opening into our natural state of "self," oneness with Being — the vast realm of consciousness or universal intelligence itself, of which the thinking mind is only a tiny aspect. This is the realm of inner stillness from where all the things arise that make life worth living: creativity, peace, aliveness, joy, love. http://wenku.baidu.com/

John Main's Teaching On Meditation ~ Laurence Freeman

John Main OSB (1926-1982) was born in London on 21 January 1926. While attached to the Governor General’s office in Malaya during the Emergency he learned from Swami Satyananda how to meditate and took up the discipline of silence, stillness and simplicity as part of his Christian faith and daily prayer. In 1975 he opened the first Christian Meditation Centre at Ealing Abbey in London and began what was to be the culminating mission of his lifelong search for God and service of others. Realising that this way of the prayer of the heart could guide the search for many modern people for deeper spiritual experience, he recommended two regular daily periods of meditation to be integrated with the usual practices of Christian life. www.youtube.com/watch?

The Secret of Authentic Happiness - Martin Seligman

In this animated book review, we cover the big idea that happiness stems from applying your signature strengths in your daily life. Being happy and living a fulfilled life is simply finding what you’re good at and using it to benefit the world. This new positive psychology from Authentic Happiness can be used in anybody’s life to generate and creative positive and blissful emotions. Hedonistic happiness can be found all over the world, with people finding quick means to an end, but lasting happiness must be created by finding your purpose. This goes the other way too, trying to make someone happy can be very difficult unless you can make them feel they have a certain purpose. www.youtube.com/watch?

Action for Happiness

We all want to live happy and fulfilling lives and we want the people we love to be happy too. So happiness matters to all of us. Happiness is about our lives as a whole: it includes the fluctuating feelings we experience everyday but also our overall satisfaction with life. It is influenced by our genes, upbringing and our external circumstances - such as our health, our work and our financial situation. But crucially it is also heavily influenced by our choices - our inner attitudes, how we approach our relationships, our personal values and our sense of purpose. www.youtube.com/watch?

The Golden Future ~ Osho

This small book, The Greatest Challenge: The Golden Future, is unashamedly addressed to the intelligent people of this threatened planet. It is a response to the report of the United Nations from the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future, which identifies the major issues threatening the future of this planet. This book presents another facet of the Osho vision, a proposal for a viable humanity; a diagnosis of the psychological and social sicknesses that divide human beings, within and without, into warring factions. It outlines the critical steps required if there is to be any future – let alone the golden future that lies within our grasp. www.youtube.com/watch?

The Three-Minute Breathing Space Practice ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn

There are three steps to the practice:

Attend to what is. The first step invites attending broadly to one’s experience, noting it, but without the need to change what is being observed.

Focus on the breath. The second step narrows the field of attention to a single, pointed focus on the breath in the body.

Attend to the body. The third step widens attention again to include the body as a whole and any sensations that are present.www.youtube.com

Happy ~ Derren Brown

Derren Brown has written a book on happiness, so it seems reasonable to assume he is something of an expert. He says he is happy, and judging by the bibliography, he has definitely read a lot on the subject. But I’m not sure the two of us agree on what happiness is. His book, Happy, advocates “contentment”, “tranquillity”, a “considered” life. It all feels so unexciting.“It doesn’t sound very joyful, does it?” Brown agrees. “But would you press the button for consistently joyful, which is clearly not real or a bit mad or exhausting, or would you press the button for a robust sense of calmness and balance?” I think, in that situation, I would hunt around for a third button, the one marked “frequent spontaneous bursts of ecstasy” – there is something listless about the thought of all that calmness – but Brown sees balance as “a much more helpful aim. I think it’s what we want.” www.youtube.com/watch

Walking in Zen, Sitting in Zen ~ Osho

Zen is not a philosophy at all. To approach Zen as if it is a philosophy is to begin in a wrong way from the very beginning. A philosophy is something of the mind; Zen is totally beyond the mind. Zen is the process of going above the mind, far away from the mind; it is the process of transcendence, of surpassing the mind. You cannot understand it by the mind, mind has no function in it. Zen is a state of no-mind, that has to be remembered. It is not Vedanta. Vedanta is a philosophy; you can understand it perfectly well. Zen is not even Buddhism; Buddhism is also a philosophy. www.youtube.com/watch?
